Penn Twp., PA (WBNG Binghamton) Thousands of gallons of hydrofracturing fluid spills at a gas well pad in Pennsylvania.

The state's Department of Environmental Protection is investigating a spill in Penn Township in Lycoming County.

The gas well pad is owned by XTO Energy.

The spill was discovered by a DEP inspector who noticed that the valve of a fracking fluid tank was left open.

No one else was at the well at the time of the discovery.

The DEP estimates 13,000 gallons of fluid may have been released.

It's now testing a tributary to Sugar Run as well as 2 private drinking wells for possible contamination.

XTO Energy has hired a cleanup contractor to contain and remedy the situation.

XTO has not yet provided an explanation for the open valve.
