Sen. Tom Libous has been named to the Senate’s Energy and Telecommunications Committee, where he will be ideally positioned to monitor legislation regarding drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale area.

“My constituents need someone to keep a close eye – and a strong voice -- on the natural gas issue,” Libous said. “I’ll make sure that we protect the environment while carefully tapping a resource that could create billions of dollars of investment – and hundreds, or even thousands of career opportunities -- in my district.”

Libous was named to the committee under new Senate rules that require each committee to have roughly the same representation of majority and minority senators as the entire Senate. That means each committee now has a one-person Democratic majority.

“This also gives me a chance to speak up for green-energy developments in my district,” Libous said. “Binghamton University is doing some really astounding things with solar energy. And SUNY-Morrisville has made great strides with using soybeans and algae to develop new fuels.”

That, Libous said, could position his district at the forefront of affordable energy efforts, leading to good career opportunities and economic growth.
